Dorothy Varian papers, circa 1902-1984
The papers of painter Dorothy Varian date from circa 1902 to 1984 and measure 2.3 linear feet. This collection documents Varian's life primarily through scattered biographical material; correspondence with family, friends, artists, and art galleries; personal business records; a few writings; exhibition catalogs, news clippings, and other printed material; photographs of Varian, her friends, including Peggy Bacon, Alex Brook, Bernard Karfiol, and Yauso Kuniyoshi, and artwork; and original sketches by Varian and fellow artist Peggy Bacon.
Robert Sutherland Lord papers, 1890-2013
This collection consists of the personal and professional papers of Dr. Robert Sutherland Lord, a prominent organist based at the University of Pittsburgh. As one of the few students of Jean Langlais, Dr. Lord became a prominent scholar on nineteenth and twentieth century French organ music and the foremost authority on French organist and composer, Charles Tournemire. Dr. Lord served as the chapel organist at the Heinz Memorial Chapel in addition to his teaching responsibilities in the Music Department and was responsible for both the 1971 and the 1995 renovations of the chapel organ. Over Dr. Lord’s 37 year tenure with the University of Pittsburgh he gave approximately 160 organ concerts, his most popular classes attracted over 800 students per year, and he played for over 4,000 weddings.
Francis Patrick Garvan papers, 1867, 1912-1953
The papers of art collector Francis Patrick Garvan measure 44.9 linear feet and date from 1912 to 1953, with one document from 1867. The papers provide extensive documentation on the Garvan collection which included rare books, ceramics, glass, paintings, prints, and furniture. The majority of the collection consists of inventory records that give descriptive information regarding each piece in the collection; in many cases the files also include a photograph of the object. Also found are correspondence and subject files; auction records for sales at the American Art Association, Parke-Bernet Galleries, and Plaza Art Galleries; loan records; estate records; and a small amount of printed material, writings, and photographs. Approximately half of the Garvan papers were created posthumously by Mabel Brady Garvan and the managers of Garvan's estate.
Reginald Gammon papers, 1927-2007, bulk 1960-2005
The Reginald Gammon papers measure 2.4 linear feet and date from 1927 to 2007 (bulk 1960-2005). The papers contain biographical material, personal and professional correspondence, writings and artwork by Gammon, printed material, and photographs regarding Gammon's career as a painter, educator, and prominent member of the African American art scene.
